CAR WASHING AT A SELF-SERVICE STATION: HOW TO DO IT RIGHT AND SAFELY
July 3, 2024
Have you ever wondered where those spider web scratches on your car’s paint come from? Or how to properly wash your car at a self-service station? The truth is, most of those swirls and scratches come from improper washing techniques. It’s a classic case of “tried to do it better, but ended up worse.” ?
Not having a hose or a pressure washer at home doesn’t mean you can’t give your car a professional-level cleaning. If you live in a city apartment but still want to detail your car yourself, the answer is simple – head to your local self-service car wash.
It’s easier than you think. To prove it, we’ve created a special guide and toolkit that includes everything you need, along with a step-by-step guide to washing your car correctly at a self-service station.
☑️ STEP 1 – CLEANING WHEELS AT THE CAR WASH
The golden rule of car washing is to start with the dirtiest parts and work your way to the cleaner areas.
Your first task is to clean the wheels, starting with a thorough pre-rinse to remove loose dirt. At home, you might clean one wheel at a time, but here, time is limited, and there’s no risk of the cleaner drying on your car. So, you can pre-soak all four wheels at once.
Begin by spraying a generous amount of wheel cleaner on each wheel. Let it work while you insert your first token or bill into the machine.
After a few minutes, rinse the wheels to remove the heaviest grime. For more thorough cleaning, you’ll need a bucket of clean water. Before filling the bucket, add some car shampoo and create suds with high-pressure water. This mix will act as both a cleaner and a lubricant for the next step. If the wheels are particularly dirty, reapply the cleaner and clean one wheel at a time. Use a wheel brush for the inner surfaces and a detailing brush or sponge for the outer parts.

☑️ STEP 2 – PRE-WASH AT THE SELF-SERVICE STATION (PHASE 1)
Usually, this stage involves rinsing the wheels, but you can also start pre-washing by applying the standard foam (touchless shampoo) available at the station.
The downside? You don’t know the pH level or the strength of the foam provided. Often, these products are highly potent and can damage chrome, plastic, or other sensitive surfaces. If you’re serious about proper car care, consider investing in your own foam cannon and touchless shampoo.
While this strong pre-wash cleaner works on breaking down heavy dirt, rinse the wheels, and then wash the body from the bottom up. Once done, use any remaining time to fill your buckets for the next phase.
☑️ STEP 3 – CONTACT WASH (PHASE 2: HAND WASHING AT THE SELF-SERVICE STATION)
For a swirl-free wash, stick to the two-bucket method: one bucket with 3–4 caps of shampoo and another with plain water for rinsing. If you only have one bucket, use a foam cannon to apply the shampoo.
During contact washing, follow the basic rules. Start with the less dirty areas (roof, windshield, and hood) and work your way down. Always rinse your wash mitt in the rinse bucket before reloading it with foam.
Once the entire car is washed, proceed to a final rinse using the high-pressure washer.
☑️ STEP 4 – DRYING AND FINISHING TOUCHES
Drying your car after washing is essential to prevent water spots. Use a microfiber drying towel, starting with the body, then the door jambs, trunk lids, and finally, the wheels. Move your car away from the wash bay for this step.
The key here is to take your time and ensure all water is thoroughly wiped off. Tap water isn’t as pure as rainwater, especially in areas with hard water, so it can leave mineral spots if left to dry.
Next, focus on polishing your windows and mirrors. Use a glass cleaner and a waffle-weave microfiber towel for streak-free results. Spray the cleaner directly on the glass and wipe clean. Don’t forget to clean the inside of the windows as well, as dirty glass, especially when lit from within, can ruin the overall look.

FINAL TOUCHES: PROTECT AND SHINE
The last steps not only add a layer of protection but also take your car wash to the next level with minimal effort.
Tire Conditioner: Apply tire shine using an applicator for a sleek finish. It not only enhances the look but also protects the rubber from cracking and fading caused by UV rays.
Quick Detailer or Spray Wax: Use this to wipe off any remaining water droplets or streaks. It’s the perfect product for removing water spots and leaving the paint with a glossy, smooth finish. Spray onto one section at a time, spread with a microfiber cloth, and then buff with the dry side for a clear, polished surface.
This quick guide will elevate your car washing game to a professional level, leaving results that speak for themselves. ?
